Location

The site is 50 miles south of Chicago and 15 miles east-southeast of Kankakee. It lies north of 2000S Road, and east of 16000E Road in Pembroke Township. The reserve is a key conservation holding within the Pembroke Savannas. The Pembroke Savannas are a subset of the larger region referred to as the Kankakee Sands, which lies south of the Kankakee River and encompasses regions within Grundy, Will, Kankakee, and Iroquois County.

Description

Tallmadge Savanna comprises a mosaic of natural communities’ representative of the Kankakee Sand Area Section of the Grand Prairie Natural Division including dry sand savanna, dry-mesic sand savanna, sand flatwoods, and sand prairie. A portion of the site supports Grade B dry sand savanna recognized on the Illinois Natural Areas Inventory, and the remainder of natural communities found on site are Grade C in quality. The reserve provides habitat for at least four Species in Greatest Need of Conservation, four state-listed species, and uncommon animal species, including the plains pocket gopher.
