Land and Water Reserve Area

1

County

Kane

Location

The site is east of the Fox River on the western edge of Bartlett, and the southeast edge of south Elgin, within Kane and DuPage Counties. It is within the James Pate Philip State Park, which extends into Cook, DuPage, and Kane Counties.

Description

Tri-County Wetland Land and Water Reserve consists of upland and emergent marsh communities, as well as two small ephemeral ponds identified on the Illinois Natural Areas Inventory as the Tri-County Wetlands INAI site (#1443). The upland area surrounding the wetland is being restored to prairie. Management along with seeding will allow native prairie vegetation to re-colonize the wetland. The site also consists of a large population of a state-endangered species which occurs around the ephemeral ponds within the marsh. The site is within James Pate Philip State Park, which provides additional habitat to sandhill cranes nesting in the adjacent Pratts Wayne Marsh, great blue herons from the nearby Bartlett Balefill rookery, and a variety of other wetland species. The surrounding area outside of the park is being restored to prairie and wetland, which will serve as an important buffer to the natural area.
