Location

The reserve is in Manito township southwest of Peoria. Sand Ridge State Forest is located across Country Road 2600E, and eight Illinois Natural Areas Inventory sites are within 5 miles.

Description

Walden West Land and Water Reserve supports remnant sand prairie as well as black-oak dominated woodland. It contains a variety of flora and fauna native to the Illinois River Sand Areas, allowing the site to function as an additional population source for similar habitats occurring on nearby state-owned properties. Conservative plant species present include bird’s food violet, prairie wild indigo, fragrant sumac, and clustered poppy mallow. There is additionally a population of a state-threatened species.
