Location

The site is on the southeast edge of the City of Charleston in southeast Coles County.

Description

Woodyard Memorial Conservation Area protects forest, hill prairie, and river within the Embarrass River watershed. The forest  of the woodland, hill prairie, and ridge tracts is primarily mature second or third growth forest that consists of dry-mesic and mesic upland forest, with narrow bands of wet-mesic upland forest. The site also protects part of the Embarras River and the associated riparian habitat. Over 160 types of native plants inhabit the woodland and river area. The natural communities also provide habitat for several state threatened and endangered species.

Access

The site is open to the public. The best hill prairie area is not connected to the main site and is closed to the public. The rest of the site adjacent to Lake Charleston is open to the public.
