Project Title: Survey of the Distribution, Size, and Development of Canebrakes in Southern Illinois

Community and/or Species Focus:

 Canebrake, Swainson's warbler

Goals/Objectives:
  1. Document the size and spatial distribution of canebrakes in southern Illinois
  2. Survey existing stands of cane for Swainson's warbler
  3. Survey cane and non-cane habitat to determine if other bird species prefer cane
Achievements:
  1. Observed canebrake in bottomland and riparian forests, such as those along the upper and lower Cache River, Bellrose Waterfowl Preserve, and in the western Shawnee National Forest
  2. Observed 14 other bird species to have an affinity for canebrake
  3. Observed a few territorial male Swainson's warbler in canebrake habitat
