Project Title: Survey of the Distribution, Size, and Development of Canebrakes in Southern Illinois
Community and/or Species Focus:
Canebrake, Swainson's warbler
Goals/Objectives:
- Document the size and spatial distribution of canebrakes in southern Illinois
- Survey existing stands of cane for Swainson's warbler
- Survey cane and non-cane habitat to determine if other bird species prefer cane
Achievements:
- Observed canebrake in bottomland and riparian forests, such as those along the upper and lower Cache River, Bellrose Waterfowl Preserve, and in the western Shawnee National Forest
- Observed 14 other bird species to have an affinity for canebrake
- Observed a few territorial male Swainson's warbler in canebrake habitat
