Project Title: Defining Expectations for Mussel Communities in Illinois Wadeable Streams

Community and/or Species Focus: Mussels

Goals/Objectives:

  1. Update knowledge of mussel SGCN in areas where locality or recruitment information is incomplete
  2. Status revision and update for mussel SGCN
  3. Develop at least 5 actions for the Streams Campaign, focused on mussel conservation
  4. Develop a species distribution model for at least 30 Illinois mussel species
  5. Enhance the data entry and export functionality of IDNR's master mussel database

Achievements:

  1. ​Mussel data collection, recruitment sampling, habitat suitability assessments, and geographic range assessments were conducted for mussel SGCN
  2. Reviewed 77 mussel species (including the current mussel SGCN) using SGCN criteria​; status objectives and stresses were also updated and revised for the current SGCN
  3. Developed 5 suggested actions for the Streams Campaign
  4. Developed a species distribution model for 39 mussel species that predicted relative abundance and historic ranges
  5. The database was inventoried, organized, and imported for data entry or export
