Renee Snow

Renee Snow was appointed interim director of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources on July 1, 2026.

A Sangamon County native, she has been an attorney for IDNR since 2014 and served as the agency’s first female general counsel from 2019 to 2026.

As chief legal counsel for the agency, she provided legal guidance to executive leadership, employees and programs to support the management, conservation and preservation of Illinois’ natural, recreational, historical and cultural resources. She advised agency leadership on the legal sufficiency of all legislative matters, regulatory enforcement and agency operations.

She is deeply familiar with some of the most complex projects and challenges facing the department, including the Brandon Road Interbasin Project, federal conservation funding, fiscal and grants operations, fishing and hunting laws and programs, historic preservation, and more.

Snow has dedicated her legal career to public service. Prior to joining IDNR, she was an assistant attorney general in the Illinois Attorney General’s Office. She previously served as an assistant state’s attorney in Sangamon and Effingham counties, and she earned her law degree from Southern Illinois University School of Law in 2004.

Beyond her legal work, she is passionate about mentoring the next generation of leaders, drawing from her experience raising three strong, independent daughters. She resides in Springfield with her youngest daughter, Addison. Her oldest daughter, Tosi, resides in Atlanta with her husband and completed a master’s degree in public health at Emory University. Her daughter Lade’ graduated from the Boston University School of Dental Medicine and is a pediatric dental resident at UCONN residing in West Hartford, Connecticut.

Renee enjoys travel and spending as much time with her family as possible.
