Electrical Certification

Mine Electrician Experience and Documentation

Candidates for Mine Electrician Certification must:

  • Document 1 year experience in performing electrical work in a coal mine or acceptable related industry.
  • Complete 112 hour Illinois Initial Mine Electrical Training course.
  • Complete an eight hour Illinois Basic Electrical Safety Training (IBEST) class.
  • Pass written/oral/practical examinations.
  • Candidates possessing current coal mine electrical qualification from another MSHA approved State coal mine electrical program must:
    • Provide documentation from entity issuing MSHA electrical qualification confirming the certification is current
    • Complete an eight hour IBEST class
    • Pass written/oral/practical examinations
  • Candidates who possesses a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from an accredited university must:
    • Provide documentation of electrical engineering degree
    • Document 1 year experience in performing electrical work in a coal mine or acceptable related industry.
    • Complete an eight hour IBEST class
    • Pass written/oral/practical examinations
  • Candidates having completed 96 hours of required MSHA electrical training and not passed an MSHA administered examination must:
    • Provide documentation of completing 96 hours of classroom instruction
    • Complete an additional 16 hours of classroom instruction
    • Document 1 year experience in performing electrical work in a coal mine or acceptable related industry.
    • Complete an eight hour IBEST class
    • Pass written/oral/practical examinations

Documents Required:

  • Application
  • Renewal Application
  • Provide work log detailing 1 year electrical experience
  • Proof of successfully completing IBEST class
  • Electrical Engineering Degree (if applicable)
  • Proof of coal mine electrical qualification from an MSHA approved State program and letter of good standing (if applicable)
  • Documentation of MSHA electrical classroom training (if applicable)

Temporary Mine Electrician Certification Available If:

  • Candidate possesses current coal mine electrical qualification from another MSHA approved State coal mine electrical program and provides documentation from the entity issuing the MSHA coal mine electrician qualification confirming certification is current.
  • Completes an application for temporary certification.
  • Temporary certification valid until next scheduled IBEST class.
  • Permanent certification can be obtained by completing IBEST class and passing written/oral/practical examination.
