Mazonia-Braidwood State Fish and Wildlife Area - ComEd

On or about June 25, 2000, Commonwealth Edison Company (Com-Ed) released 4,450 gallons of diesel oil and/or other petroleum material into water in a perimeter ditch at the Braidwood facility in Grundy County.  The release resulted in impacts to the soil, surface water, and groundwater, and adversely impacted, or threatened to impact, flora, fauna, and aquatic life.  In addition, the oil release traveled to a nearby wetland and caused the deaths of fish, amphibians, reptiles, and migratory birds.

An NRDA was completed by the Illinois Natural Resources Trustees.  A settlement was agreed to by all parties.  The matter was settled in September of 2002.

Due to the permanent losses of fish, amphibians, reptiles and migratory birds, a moist soil project was proposed and implemented at the nearby Mazonia-Braidwood State Fish and Wildlife Area.  A final restoration plan was drafted in 2004 and funds were utilized in 2006 for project implementation.  Site conditions and wildlife observations have been recorded during post restoration site visits.  A summary of the project was drafted in 2015.  The 5-acre moist soil project continues to provide habitat for the wildlife that were lost as a result of the diesel oil release.  Therefore, the project is considered a success.  ​​​​
