Yeoman Creek - Yeoman Creek Landfill
The Yeoman Creek landfill (YCL) is located in Waukegan, Illinois. Waste from industrial, commercial, and municipal sources was received at the YCL site from 1958 through 1969. The Illinois EPA began investigating the YCL unit in the late 1970s in response to the risk of leachate releases to Yeoman Creek, and the use of inadequate cover in the final landfill cap. The YCL was added to the National Priorities List (Superfund) in 1989. The trustees have reviewed relevant information which indicates that oil and hazardous substances have been released into groundwater, surface water, wetlands, stream sediments, and soil. Natural resources affected include the following: fish, amphibians, and reptiles; aquatic and terrestrial mammals; migratory birds, including waterfowl, shorebirds, and raptors; lands, including wetlands, shorelines, soil and geologic resources; aquatic and terrestrial plants and micro-organisms; threatened and endangered species; air; and surface waters, groundwater, and sediments.
An NRDA claim was made by the Illinois Natural Resource Trustees for the purpose of estimating injury amounts and planning for restoration. An NRDA settlement was agreed upon by all parties. The matter was settled in January 2007. Illinois Natural Resource Trustees will be coordinating with the Federal Trustees as the Federal Trustees take the lead on the restoration planning and implementation.
