Illinois Endangered and Threatened Species Rehabilitation Grants

What is the Purpose of this Grant Program?

The Illinois Wildlife Preservation Fund Rehabilitation Grant Program provides funding for the maintenance of Wildlife Rehabilitation facilities that take care of threatened or endangered species.

What projects are eligible for funding?

  1. Necessary maintenance of facilities used to rehabilitate threatened or endangered species.

  2. Necessary structural repair and maintenance of existing buildings, pens, cages and appurtenant facilities used to take care of threatened or endangered wildlife species.

What is the funding source for this program?

Funding for this grant program is derived from the Illinois Non-Game Wildlife Protection Act [30 ILCS 155/4(c). Under this act, five percent (5%) of non-federal dollars deposited into the Illinois Wildlife Preservation Fund are committed to grants through this program. The main source of funding is the Illinois Wildlife Preservation Fund check-off on the Illinois 1040 State income tax return. Administrative Rule for this program.

Application Deadline: No Application are being accepted at this time.

Grant Amount: Up to $2,000 per year for each eligible application. Two-year grants are permitted and may not exceed $4000.

Match: No match is required.

Eligible Applicants: Eligible recipients are limited to those persons and/or organizations who possess a current wildlife rehabilitation license/permit issued by the Department and who have provided care for threatened or endangered wildlife species during the 3-year period preceding the date of their application for grant funds. Those applicants who intend to use any portion of grant funds received from the Department to take care of migratory birds must also possess a current wildlife rehabilitation license/permit issued by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service allowing that activity.

Number of applications allowed per applicant: No limit, however each project must be a distinct, standalone project.

Application Fees: This program does not require an application fee

Prequalification: Non-profit and local government applicants must be registered on the State of Illinois Grantee Portal prior to the application deadline date. Award Announcement: Awards are generally announced within 180 days following the application deadline date.

What expenses are eligible for funding?

Eligible expenses include:

  1. Costs associated with structural repair and maintenance of existing buildings, pens, cages and secondary buildings and facilities used to take care of threatened or endangered wildlife species.

Direct project costs associated with structural repair and maintenance may include:

  • Contractual Services
  • Supplies and Materials
  • Purchase or Rental of Necessary Equipment
  • Staff Time (including fringe/benefits) directly related to project completion

Indirect Costs are allowable in compliance with the Grant Accountability and Transparency Act
