Camp Like a Pro

Camp Like a Pro, an initiative of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, offers resources for both new and experienced campers who wish to explore Illinois’ great outdoors safely and sustainably.

By sharing easy, budget-friendly ways to reduce waste, prepare responsibly, and respect wildlife, we make it simple for everyone to protect our parks and keep them healthy, clean and enjoyable for all.

Whether you’re a seasoned camper or new to the experience, IDNR welcomes you to spend time at an Illinois state park, learn how to camp like a pro, embark on an exciting new adventure, and create lasting memories.

How can you camp like a pro?

Camping is one of the best ways to connect with nature, but being prepared helps ensure the experience is safe, respectful and fun.

Whether you’re new to camping or an experienced adventurer, a little preparation and awareness go a long way. Camp smart, tread lightly, and leave the outdoors better than how you found it.

  • Before heading out, learn about the wildlife in the area and how to coexist safely –store food properly, keep a respectful distance and never feed animals.
  • Practice “leave no trace” principles by sticking to established sites, packing out all waste and leaving nature as you found it.
  • Weather can change quickly, so be sure to check forecasts, dress in layers and bring the right gear to stay dry and comfortable.
  • Always have an emergency plan. Carry a first aid kit, know basic outdoor safety and let someone know your itinerary.
