Wildlife safety
Exploring a state park means sharing space with incredible wildlife. From deer and birds to snakes and amphibians, every encounter should be experienced with care and respect.
By respecting wildlife, you will help preserve the natural beauty found at Illinois state parks and ensure a safe experience for everyone. Follow these guidelines to keep yourself, others and the animals safe.
Remember, humans are guests in the animals’ home.
General wildlife safety tips
- Keep your distance. Always observe animals from afar. Use binoculars or a zoom lens instead of approaching.
- Never feed wildlife. Feeding animals makes them dependent on humans and can lead to aggressive behavior.
- Stay on marked trails. This reduces your chances of unexpected encounters and protects natural habitats.
- Keep pets under control. Pets always must be leashed for the safety of your pet and the wildlife.
- Store food securely. Use designated containers or lockers to prevent attracting animals.
What NOT to do
- Do not attempt to take selfies with wildlife.
- Do not throw objects at animals.
- Do not leave behind trash or food.
- Do not provoke or corner animals.
In case of emergency
- If an animal behaves aggressively, slowly move away and seek shelter.
- Report dangerous wildlife activity to park staff immediately.
- Call emergency services if you are in immediate danger.
