The IDNR headquarters at 1 Natural Resources Way in Springfield has experienced a power outage and tree damage throughout the grounds as a result of severe storms in the area. The agency expects to reopen the building to the public on Monday, June 15, 2026, though this could be subject to change. Check back here for an update before planning to visit the office in person.

The Johnson-Sauk Trail campground will close on Monday, November 3rd at 12:00 noon in preparation of our annual Disabled Outdoor (DOO) shotgun hunt. The entire park will close at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 5th for our DOO hunt and will re-open the morning of Saturday, November 8th. NO ARCHERY HUNTING WILL BE ALLOWED ON 11/5/25, 11/6/25 & 11/7/25.

There will be no dove season at Johnson-Sauk Trail for the 2025 season.

NOTICE: Ryan’s Round Barn will open for the season Saturday, May 3. Friends of Johnson-Sauk Trail will lead guided tours the first and third Saturdays of the month, May through September 1- 4 p.m. For more information, call the park office at 309-853-2425.

From cross-country skiing in the winter to a lazy picnic in the summer, from a fishing trip in the spring to exploring fields of wildflowers amidst the fall colors of the giant oaks, Johnson-Sauk Trail State Recreation Area truly is a park for all seasons.
Located on a glacial moraine that forms the beautiful, rolling hills of Henry County in north-central Illinois, the park sits astride a trail that led Native Americans from Lake Michigan to the confluence of the Mississippi and Rock rivers.

Johnson-Sauk Trail State Recreation Area features 1,365 acres and abundant recreation opportunities.

Park hours are May 1 - November 1 from sunrise - 10 p.m.; November 1 - May 1 from sunrise - sunset. Lakeshore Loop Road is a day use area that is open May 1 - November 1 from sunrise - sunset.​
