Stories and Testimonials

Everyone Belongs in Nature. Here’s Proof

At IDNR, we believe the most meaningful stories come from the communities we serve. The Nature Festival at William Powers is an annual celebration of belonging, connection, and the joy of discovering nature, especially for those who may not have always had access to it.

The video below captures that story in action. Organized by IDNR staff, local partners, and more than three dozen community organizations, the event brings together hundreds of people, many of them exploring nature in this way for the very first time.

Community Voices

“The event means a lot to us because it is first and foremost promoting nature. It's a way for the community to gather. Not just the community here on the East Side, but we’ve got communities coming from all over the state of Illinois.”
— Rose, Community Organizer

“Some of our adults out here… some of them have never had access to nature in this way, so it's really cool to see. They’re having a great time. It’s a great experience.”
— Hector, Community Leader

“From the music to the food, the atmosphere was safe and controlled and the IDNR staff were both knowledgeable and engaging, especially with the children. This event was amazing, and it was great to see all the children taking an interest in non-electronic activities.”
— Christine, Festival Attendee

Whether it’s casting a first fishing line, walking a trail, or just enjoying time outside with family, these stories show what happens when we make space for everyone… because everyone belongs in nature.
