Incident Reporting Information

Reporting Requirements

All persons involved in an incident or accident resulting in serious personal injury, death, or damage to property from any action directly involved in a boating, hunting, or snowmobiling activity must report such incident or accident to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.

The operator of every vessel involved in a boating accident is required by law (625 ILCS 45/6-1) to file a report within 5 days of the accident with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources whenever a boating accident results in injury to a person or property damage in excess of $2,000. Accidents that result in loss of life must be reported within 48 hours of the accident.

Coroners or medical examiners must file a report to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources when a death occurs within their jurisdiction as the result of a boating accident (625 ILCS 45/6-1).

All persons involved in a hunting incident are required by law (ILCS 520 5/3.40.40) to file a report within 5 days of the incident with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources whenever a serious personal injury or death occurs from any action directly involved in a hunting activity.

The operator of every snowmobile involved in an accident is required by law (625 ILCS 40/6-1) to file a report within 5 days of the accident with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources whenever a snowmobile accident results in injury to a person or property damage in excess of $750. Accidents that result in loss of life must be reported within 48 hours of the accident.

Report Summaries

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources compiles annual summary information on reported boating accidents, hunting incidents, and snowmobile accidents.

Boating accident summaries follow a federal fiscal year reporting period (October 1 - September 30).

Hunting incident summaries follow a calendar year reporting period (January 1 - December 31).

Snowmobile accident summaries generally follow the Illinois snowmobiling season (December 10 - March 15 reporting period).
