Section 309 Assessment and Strategy

The Illinois Coastal Management Program (ICMP) completed the 2016-2020 Section 309 Assessment and Strategy (Section 309 document). This assessment is conducted every five years to determine problems and opportunities within nine specific enhancement areas:

  • Wetlands
  • Coastal hazards
  • Public access
  • Marine debris
  • Cumulative and secondary impacts
  • Special area management plans
  • Great Lakes resources
  • Energy and government facility siting
  • Aquaculture

Strategies have been developed for two priority areas: coastal hazards and public access.  Public comments were accepted on the draft document through April 30, 2015. The final Section 309 document was submitted to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration on May 29, 2015.
