Goal Two: Economic Development and Recreation

We will support and facilitate resource-related coastal economic development; including recreation, public access, and cultural and resource-based tourism.

Strategies we employ in meeting our goal:

  1. Assist in building economic viability and capacity of Illinois’ Lake Michigan coastal ports, harbors and marinas

  2. Assist municipalities and regional groups in developing projects and initiatives that benefit coastal communities

  3. Support and promote sustainable coastal tourism and recreation opportunities

  4. Support and promote health and safety in coastal recreation opportunities

  5. Increase coastal recreation engagement to a broader audience, with a focus on economically disadvantaged and under-resourced communities

CMP in Action

Calumet Collaborative

The CMP has been committed to the Calumet area from the early stages of the Millennium Reserve initiative, which began in 2012. The Calumet Collaborative nonprofit grew from this effort, an advisory council of over 30 regional leaders addressing environmental, economic development and community heritage projects to improve the Illinois-Indiana region. Our role has been in helping provide funding, support paid staff, providing technical assistance, and attracting partners.
